Solar panels can easily and quite quickly be constructed yourself. In most areas, you do have a choice as to whether to connect or continue to connect with a utility company or to put in place your own source of electrical energy. Rather than being held in bondage to a utility company and take advantage of free sources of wind and the sun that so far are not being taxed yet, why not take advantage of the advancements that science has made utilizing the wind and the sun to create your own electrical power source.
The great news is that new technologies have been developed which now place the knowledge and the materials for building your own wind and solar devices for your own personal use to be easily and economically affordable. Homeowners around the globe can now declare he independence from their utility companies. Why not set yourself free from not only the electrical bill that comes in the mail every month, also remember that these bills have to be paid with after-tax dollars, a least in America. Consider for example, a 30% tax bracket would actually be equal to the equivalent of a $100 electricity bill paid with after-tax money would be equal to a savings of $130 from gross income. It becomes relevant and important to think this way because every dollar saved from an after-tax payment had to be generated with before tax dollars from your gross earnings paycheck.
Building your own alternative power system is not as challenging and scary as it once was. With the techniques, training and information that are available for the homeowner, very average homeowners can usually use readily available tools to build very satisfactory solar panels and windmills in their basement or workshop. Generally parts are easily available in most hardware stores or from the Internet and are quite affordable.
Be sure to purchase a quality resource guide that covers not only how to build solar panels or windmills, look for all-inclusive material that provides resource areas showing you where to make your purchases of the various parts necessary for building your projects.
As you begin to build your own sources of power, either from the sun or from the wind you may find a new income source developing as your neighbors want the same for their homes :>)

Does anyone have good plans for a small 24″ three blade wind generator ?
Hi,
You can try this set of plans :
http://www.agua-luna.com/wind_gene.html
But it will be good if you spray a protecting coating on it for make it marine grade.
The following steps were taking directly out of that DIY guide I offer to those who would like to run their homes on wind power safely, reducing their monthly utility bills or even selling power back the electrical companies.
“This manual is based on using a 260 VDC, 5 A continuous duty Treadmill Motor with a 6 inch threaded hub. These motors are available for under $50 from most motor surplus stores. We are getting about 7 amps in a 30 mph wind. In other words, it is a simple, cheap little machine to get you started. ”
“ASSEMBLY
1.Place the motor on top of the square tubing & bolt it in, using the two 5/16” x ¾” bolts.
2.Place the diode on the square tubing, about 2” behind the motor, & screw it into position using the self-tapping metal screw.
3.Connect the black wire coming out of the motor to the positive incoming terminal of the diode (Labeled AC on the positive side).
4.Connect the red wire coming out of the motor to the negative incoming terminal of the diode (Labeled AC on the negative side).
5.Center the tail over the square tubing, at the back end. Clamp your tail onto the side of the square tubing.
6.Using 2 self-tapping screws, screw the tail in place.
7.Place each blade on the hub so that all the holes line up. Using the ¼” bolts & washers, bolt the blades to the hub. For the inner three holes, use two washers per bolt, one on each side of the blade. For the outer three holes, just use one washer next to the head of the bolt. Tighten.
8.Hold the end of the shaft of the motor (which comes through the hub) firmly with pliers, & turn the hub counterclockwise until it tightens & stops.
9.Screw the nipple tightly into the floor flange using a pipe wrench.
10.Clamp the nipple in a vice so that the floor flange is facing up & level.
11.Place the square tubing (and everything that is on it) on top of the floor flange & move it so that it is perfectly balanced.
12.Through the holes of the floor flange, mark the square tubing at the point of balance.
13.Drill these two holes using a 5/32″ drill bit. You will probably have to take off the hub & tail to do this).
14.Attach the square tubing to the floor flange with two sheet metal screws.
For a longer life span of your wind generator, you should paint the blades, motor sleeve, mount & tail.”
Hope this helped, feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions if you’d like assistance in making your first self sufficient steps, I’m willing to walk you step by step threw the process. I’ve written several how-to DIY guides available at www agua-luna com on the subject. I also offer online & on-site workshops, seminars & internships to help others help the environment.

Good luck.
I am considering buying Earth 4 Energy, but need to know if it really shows you how to INEXPENSIVELY convert your home to solar and wind power.
I have used these “plans” and am very happy with the purchase. For just over $100 I was able to power all my kitchen appliances on wind power. Next I am working on some of the solar plans they detail. I’m a woman with very little mechanical ability and these plans were SIMPLE to follow.

HOMEMADE ENERGY X PRIZE
Wouldn’t it be nice if the answer to all of our energy problems was right in our own backyards?
“…haven’t come up with anything like that yet.”
A submission to the “Crazy Green Idea” contest hosted by the X PRIZE Foundation
GRAND CHALLENGE:
Break the fossil fuel addiction.
Distribute/diversify our energy sources.
GOAL:
Teams must develop/refine/revolutionize home-based energy technologies. This includes (but definitely is NOT limited to) solar panels/cells, wind turbines, in-home fuel production, etc.
RULES:
1.) Keep it cheap.
-Costs must remain in the area of $1/Watt for power and $3/GGE (preferably lower) for fuels
2.) Keep it simple.
-Technologies have to be easily/cheaply mass producible in order to be economically feasible. A good technology isn’t useful if no one wants to build it.
3.) Keep it green.
-This one is self-explanatory. If it hurts the environment more than it helps, it isn’t green.
SHORT-TERM BENEFITS:
-Accelerated progress in the field of alternative energy
-Motivation for the speedy development of technologies that are both cheap and green
-Inspiration for engineers, scientists, etc. worldwide to develop alternative energy technologies
LONG-TERM BENEFITS:
-Cheaper energy bills (some may even sell energy back to power companies)
-If you could buy a fueling station for your garage, you could fill up at home
-Less demand for a limited number of energy sources means cheaper energy for everyone
-No more reliance on foreign oil, or any oil for that matter
-If we could buy biofuel/ethanol/hydrogen/etc. production stations for our homes, we wouldn’t have to wait decades for local stations to open up (if they open up at all…)
-No more large-scale blackouts (due to less-centralized energy)
-A new industry–homemade energy–will be formed, creating many new jobs and stimulating the economy
-Less greenhouse emissions
-Less pollution ociated with coal/petroleum
-Less energy problems in general…
Nothing would help the environment more than if alternative energies were widely available to us all. With that said, let’s make the Homemade Energy X PRIZE a reality.
