The largest energy provider in the UK is giving away solar panels. Read on to find out what the deal is and if you qualify.
Free solar panel offers are not new, there are a few companies that provide, install and maintain a solar photovoltaic system without any cost to you. Like all of the other offers however there are some caveats.
There are always catches but these are not to catch you out, they are just to make sure the installation on your home is worthwhile. You wouldn’t set up a micro wind turbine in your garden if you never got any wind. The same is true for solar, you have to have a South facing roof space.
Whilst this may sound restrictive it makes sense. Most of the direct sunlight in the UK comes from the South so there is not much point in installing a panel on a North facing Roof. This does mean that there are an estimated 12 million plus homes that are suitable. If you are not sure which direction is South in relation to your home wait until just after midday and see where the Sun is in the sky. That will be approximately South.
The UK has different levels of sunshine and the farther South you go the sunnier it gets. We get the longest hours of sunshine in the far South, in the UK this means Cornwall.
Solar panels produce electricity by turning sunlight into energy. Your panels do not have to be exposed to direct sunshine to work. In fact they will still work on a cloudy or overcast day. However they do work best in direct sunlight when the light is at its strongest.
Systems that are currently being offered for installation are worth just over fourteen thousand pounds. There are two systems on offer, a 2.52kWp system and a larger 3.15kWp. The larger of the two does require a larger roof space but generates more electricity.
The deal is that they will install and maintain the panels. Technically you will not own the panels but instead they tend to think of it as renting your roof space. In return you get to use all of the electricity that the panels produce. In essence you will be getting free electricity which they estimate could reduce your electricity bill by as much as eighty percent.
