By pioneering and exploiting a range of different renewable technologies, Portugal hopes to rejuvenate its lagging economy. It’s leading the world in adopting renewable energy.
While 70 hungry children play by the beach, Professor Ruivo cooks their lunch. But he’s not barbecuing the food. He’s testing out his latest solar power cooker. “I’m a fanatic of solar cooking”. From powering energy stations with rubbish to building the world’s largest solar farm and first commercial wavefarm, Portugal is blazing a trail in renewable technologies. As well as saving the environment, the hope is this technology will give it a competitive advantage. “By pushing renewable energies you create new economic advantage”, states Dr Barreto. Prof Peirra agrees. “The impact of this on the economy will be large”.
